This is not a subject I might talk about that often, but this article left me kind of saddened by its implications.
British woodlands are less biologically distinctive than they were 70 years ago, says a team of UK researchers.
Says it all really. I enjoy going out into the woods whenever I can (which hasn’t been at all virtually in the past few years due to circumstance), and to think that we have lost some part of what makes woodlands such magical places, is tremendously sad indeed.
However I do know that The Woodland Trust is developing a new 800 acre forest in Hertfordshire that promises to be the largest native forest in England. This is great and welcome news I feel, and will certainly; as the above article points out, provide a much needed boost to replenishing the dwindling woodland and forested areas in the UK, which have been on the decline since the 30′s, with over half of that ancient woodland having dissapeared. Only some 4.87% of the UK is forested, and this just makes me tremendously sad. Hopefully with initiatives such as the “Heartwood Forest” which I mentioned above, the number of forested land in the UK may increase in the future, offering future generations – including myself of course – the opportunity to enjoy these magical places.
